1. Overview
The University of Washington maintains several Tuition & Fees dashboards that display tuition costs for students enrolled at UW. Together, these dashboards allow users to find and compare tuition costs across a range of characteristics, including campus, residency, student level, tuition category, and credit-hour load.
The following dashboards are covered in these instructions. Click the name of a dashboard to open it directly, or use the links in the right-hand menu on this page to access the same dashboards:
- Annual/Quarterly Undergraduate Tuition and Fees - undergraduate students; current academic year
- Annual/Quarterly Graduate Tuition and Fees - graduate students; current academic year
- Annual/Quarterly Tuition and Fees – Detailed View - both undergraduate and graduate; current and two most recent academic years
All dashboards display tuition information only for students enrolled in tuition-based programs. Information about fee-based programs offered through UW's Continuum College (CC), including fee amounts, is available on its website.
Fee-based program rates are also available on the Fee-Based Programs page.
Students enrolled in a tuition-based program on any UW campus will be charged Tuition, which comprises the Operating and Building Fees and a number of Mandatory Fees, including Technology, Services & Activity, and other fees that differ by campus (see the Fee Names section below for details).
2. Update Schedule
All dashboards are updated in June of each year after the UW Regents approve tuition rates.
3. Annual vs. Quarterly Dashboards
Annual Full-Time Tuition Dashboard
The Annual dashboard shows the tuition and fees a full-time student will be charged for Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters combined. Annual tuition amounts do not include the summer quarter. Summer quarter tuition rates can be found in the corresponding Quarterly dashboard.
Note: This is particularly important for students in Seattle's Master's of Applied Bioengineering and Tacoma's Master's in Business Analytics, as these programs typically require registration for all four quarters of the year. Please contact your program administrators for definitive information on which quarters you will be enrolled in and charged for.
Quarterly Tuition Dashboard
The Quarterly dashboard shows the tuition and fees a tuition-based student will be charged for a selected quarter and credit-hour load. Per RCW 28B.15.100, the following rules apply:
- Students taking fewer than two credit hours will be charged for two credit hours.
- Charges will be prorated for students enrolled part-time. Note that the Part-Time Fee Breakdown amounts listed in the dashboard may differ from amounts charged or waived by Student Fiscal Services by a few cents.
- A per-credit surcharge will be charged to students taking more than 18 credits, except for professional students who have the surcharge waived or whose rates include no surcharge regardless of credit-hour load.
Full-time rate credit-hour thresholds by student type:
- Undergraduate students: 10 or more credits
- Graduate students: 7 or more credits
- Law (JD) students: 7 or more credits
- Medicine (MD) and Dentistry (DDS) students: 13 or more credits
- Pharmacy (PharmD) students: 14 or more credits (threshold changed from 7 to 14 in Autumn 2021)
Undergraduate and Graduate students pay a per-credit rate for any credits over 18, while Professional students are either not charged for credits over 18 or have those surcharges waived.
4. How to Use
If you know the specific type of information you are looking for—such as Tacoma campus tuition rates or a Graduate Tier I tuition category—use the filters found under the dashboard title (Detailed View) or above the tuition graphs (Graduate and Undergraduate dashboards) to restrict the displayed data. See Filtering Options below for details.
Using the Annual Full-Time Tuition Tab
Detailed View
By default, the Annual Detailed View dashboard displays tuition information for all three campuses, all tuition categories, and all fee components (waived or not). Campus and residency status are shown on the left side of the dashboard, with the tuition category name in the center column, followed by the total tuition costs for each academic year in unadjusted dollar amounts.
Tuition category names are listed without specific tuition code numbers. Tuition code numbers can be displayed by selecting the + sign when hovering over the tuition category column. When a category is selected in the Annual Tuition table, the Annual Fee Breakdown table below automatically updates to show only the fees for the selected category.
Graduate Dashboard
By default, the Annual Graduate Tuition and Fees dashboard displays tuition for the Seattle campus, residents, master's level students, and graduate post-bacc/non-matriculated graduate programs, with all fee components shown. Residency status appears in the first column, followed by the tuition category name, the graduate program, and the total tuition cost in non-adjusted dollar amounts. The Annual Fee Breakdown table below shows the individual fees associated with the selected filters, sorted by fee code type.
Undergraduate Dashboard
By default, the Annual Undergraduate Tuition and Fees dashboard displays tuition for the Seattle campus, residents, and undergraduate students. The annual cost of tuition for the selected filters is shown in bold in the center of the page, above the Annual Fee Breakdown table. When a category is selected, the Annual Fee Breakdown table below will automatically update to show only the fees for the selected tuition category.
Using the Quarterly Tuition Tab
Detailed View
By default, the Quarterly Detailed View dashboard displays tuition costs for all campuses, all tuition categories, all fee components, the fall quarter, and 15 quarterly credit hours. Each characteristic can be filtered as needed. Campus and residency status appear to the left, with the tuition category name in the center column, followed by the tuition costs for each academic year in non-adjusted dollar amounts. Tuition code numbers can be displayed by selecting the + sign when hovering over the tuition category column.
Graduate Dashboard
By default, the Quarterly Graduate Tuition and Fees dashboard displays tuition for the Seattle campus, residents, master's level students, the graduate post-bacc/non-matriculated graduate program, all student waivers, fall quarter, and 15 quarterly credit hours. Residency status appears in the first column, followed by tuition category name, graduate program, and total tuition costs for the selected quarter. The Quarterly Fee Breakdown table below shows individual fees sorted by fee code type.
Undergraduate Dashboard
By default, the Quarterly Undergraduate Tuition dashboard displays tuition costs for the Seattle campus, residents, undergraduates, fall quarter, and 15 quarterly credit hours. Each characteristic can be filtered as needed. The Quarterly Fee Breakdown table below shows individual fees associated with each tuition category name and code, sorted by fee code type.
5. Filtering Options
Filters restrict the displayed data to selected characteristics. Each possible answer choice is represented as a segment of a bar, graph, or table. The following filters are available across dashboards:
Common Filters (All Dashboards)
Campus
Indicates tuition and fees associated with each UW campus (Seattle / Bothell / Tacoma). Note that tuition is driven by the campus to which you have been admitted—whether in a specific degree program or as a Non-matriculated student—regardless of where you attend classes.
Tuition Residency
Returns costs of attendance according to resident status (Resident / Nonresident). Classification is determined by RCW 28B.15.012. Resident students (often referred to as 'in-state') are those who live in Washington State and meet residency requirements. Nonresidents are students who are not residents of Washington State. Residency details can be found at the UW Registrar site.
TAs and RAs Receiving Waivers
Academic Student Employees whose graduate assistantships include a tuition waiver are referred to as Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Research Assistants (RAs) receiving Waivers. The dashboards show which component fees are waived and which require payment, even when tuition is waived. For more information on which category your TA/RA position falls into, check with your department administrator.
Quarterly Credit Hours
Determines tuition amounts based on selected quarterly credit hours. Use the arrow and drag tool in the Quarterly dashboard to select the number of credit hours of interest. See Section 3 above for full-time rate thresholds by student type.
Tuition Quarter (Quarterly dashboard only)
Allows you to select a specific quarter of interest. Defaults to Fall quarter.
Detailed View — Additional Filters
Tuition Category Name
Tuition categories are associated with the level and/or program of enrollment. Undergraduate degree programs are grouped into a single category, while Graduate and Professional programs are either grouped into a Tier (I, II, or III) or, if their tuition rates are unique, each program and level may have its own tuition category. This filter lists all tuition categories associated with the selected campus, ordered by Tuition Group.
Graduate Dashboard — Additional Filters
Student Level
Indicates whether tuition costs are displayed for master's, doctoral, or professional level students.
Graduate Program
Allows you to select the specific graduate program of interest. Only programs matching the selected student level will be displayed. For example, when the Professional level is selected, only Dentistry, Law, Medicine, and Pharmacy programs will appear.
Undergraduate Dashboard — Additional Filters
Student Level
Allows you to select the student level of interest. For this dashboard, options are undergraduate or undergraduate post-bacc/non-matriculated.
6. Fee Names and Definitions
The following fees are mandatory charges included in tuition. All fees apply to all campuses unless otherwise noted.
Building Fee
Component of tuition charged to students for expenses related to capital infrastructure (e.g., minor works and preservation projects). Note that base tuition rates comprise Operating and Building Fees.
Operating Fee
Component of tuition charged to students covering instruction-related expenses (e.g., faculty salaries). Note that base tuition rates comprise Operating and Building Fees.
Services and Activities Fee
A mandatory fee to fund student activities and programs, or to pay toward bonds that fund new buildings, land, or facilities. Changes to the fee are proposed by a student-run, campus-specific SAF Committee and are subject to approval by the Board of Regents.
Technology Fee
A mandatory fee to fund technology resources for student use. Each campus maintains its own student-run Tech Fee Committee.
IMA Bond Fee (Seattle only)
A mandatory fee for Seattle students is used to pay debt service on the Intramural Activities (IMA) building and related recreational facilities.
Facilities Renovation Fee (Seattle only)
A mandatory fee for Seattle students is used to pay debt service associated with the renovation of the Husky Union Building, Ethnic Cultural Center, and Hall Health Primary Care Center. The fee ramped up to its full amount once students were able to access these facilities fully.
Sports Field Fee (Bothell only)
A mandatory fee for Bothell students is used to pay debt service on the Sports Field and its recreational facilities.
ARC Programming Fee (Bothell only)
A mandatory fee for Bothell students helps fund student activities, programs, and other operational costs associated with the Bothell Activities and Recreation Center (ARC).
ARC Construction Fee (Bothell only)
A mandatory fee for Bothell students is used to pay debt service associated with the construction of the Bothell Activities and Recreation Center (ARC).
YMCA Fee (Tacoma only)
A mandatory fee for Tacoma students is used to pay debt service associated with the construction of the Tacoma University YMCA recreational facility.
U-PASS Fee
U-PASS fee revenue provides students with universal access to metro and transit systems, as well as several other benefits. Tacoma's U-PASS Fee (implemented in Spring 2019) has been reduced to $20 per quarter for students residing in Thurston County. Bothell was the last campus to implement this mandatory flat fee (beginning Autumn 2025).
For additional information on fees, see the Required Student Fees page.
7. Additional Notes
Non-Matriculated Students
The tuition category lists in the dashboards include both undergraduate and graduate non-matriculated rates. This can cause confusion because the UW Continuum College (CC) website also lists a non-degree enrollment category.
Most non-matriculated students register for courses through CC and are charged fees on a per-credit basis. The non-matriculated tuition rates shown in the dashboards apply only to students who enroll using a specific exemption:
- RCW 28B.15.558 and RCW 28B.15.540 allow UW to waive tuition for UW or state employees or for Washington residents who are 60 years of age or older, for up to 6 credits on a space-available basis.
- If such students take more than six credits, the non-matriculated tuition rate applies.
- For the summer quarter only, undergraduate non-matriculated students follow the summer-only application process through the Office of the Registrar and are charged the non-matriculated undergraduate tuition rate as shown in the dashboards.
Tuition Codes
Tuition codes are 3-digit numbers used by the Student Database (SDB) to assign and charge the correct tuition rate to a given student based on their campus, residency, and program/degree level. Tuition code numbers can be displayed in any dashboard by selecting the + sign when hovering over the tuition category column.
Tuition Disclosures
To ensure compliance with RCW 28B.15.0681, additional tuition disclosures are available on the Tuition Disclosures page.
