Student Employment Program
All student employees must comply with UW Policies for eligibility, hours of work. Students and managers are responsible for notifying finsshr@uw.edu immediately of eligibility changes.
In an effort to streamline hiring processes across Finance, Planning & Budgeting, the Shared Services Finance and HR teams have developed a student employee rate guide for hiring managers to use when hiring student assistants on their teams. Please review the hourly rate recommendations below and take them into consideration when making your hiring decisions going forward.
Beginning January 1, 2021, FPB is operating on an annual submission period for student increases. Students will be eligible for increases with a positive performance evaluation and a recommendation from a supervisor. Requests for student increases outside of the month of January will be reviewed and may be held until to be effective the following January.
FPB Student Assistant Hourly Rates
Tier 1: $19.97, as of Jan. 1, 2024, base pay for the majority of students
Tier 2: $20.37, a limited number of student employees with advanced-level job knowledge or experience
Tier 3: $21.00, Graduate Students who are working at a level equivalent to Full-Time Employees (FTE) or Student Leads who are supervising other student employees
Salary Tier Determination: knowledge and skill requirements, and the complexity of the position. Most students are hired in at Tier 1 and move through the levels as they obtain new skills and higher-level duties. Exceptions to the maximum hourly rate may be made in cases of very complex work, based on supervisor justification and available funding.
Student Hiring Guide Checklist
Minimum Wage Adjustments: State and local minimum wage is reviewed and published each year effective January 1 by Central HR Compensation Office. As the minimum wage is adjusted, the Tier 1 hourly rate for students will be centrally adjusted to meet the minimum wage requirement. Please note that FPB HR will not be making any changes to current student rates at tier 2/3 as the tier 1 rate may increase - managers that feel that any current student salaries should be adjusted based on these new guidelines should work with finsshr@uw.edu to request any increases.
