Student Eligibility and Guidelines
Students must be enrolled and meet the criteria below to be considered and eligible for employment.
- Undergraduate students enrolled for a minimum of 6 credits
- Graduate students who are enrolled for a minimum of five credits, or two credits for Ph.D. candidates working on their dissertation.
- Students who have graduated may not work after their last final exam.
For additional information about student eligibility, including eligibility during school breaks and periods of non-enrollment please visit the Central HR site.
A note on remote work, Student hourly employees are not eligible for telework. Additionally, supervisors of student employees may not be fully remote and must be available for on-site supervision of student employees.
Work Hour Limits
Student hourly employees are limited to working 19.5 hours per workweek during a quarter in which the student is enrolled but may work more than 19.5 hours per workweek during school breaks or when “on leave.”
Students that have work study status are limited to 19 hours per week.
Hour limits during breaks or summer quarter
Student hourly employees may exceed the 19.5-hour limit during academic breaks (e.g., spring, winter) and between quarters under the following circumstances:
- Enrollment break period – the student met enrollment eligibility in the previous quarter but is “on leave” for a quarter prior to re-enrollment.
- Prior to the first quarter of enrollment – the student meets enrollment criteria for the next quarter and wants to work in the prior quarter (e.g., works summer prior to autumn quarter start)
Student hourly employees who graduate are not eligible to work as a student hourly employee after their last final exam or during break periods unless they are enrolling in the following quarter as a graduate student.
For additional information regarding student work hours please visit the Central HR site.
Work Study
For departments that wish to leverage their budgets, the work study program is an alternative to standard student assistants. If you are interested in work study students who will be awarded work study aid, the job description will be submitted to the Work Study office for review before recruiting and hiring a student. The lead time for a job description to be reviewed by the Work Study Office is a two-week minimum, in addition to the time necessary to recruit a work study student. The job description must be approved before the student can start working to receive the budget subsidization. Quarter starts may require additional time for the work study office to review and approve job for work-study.
Please note any educational benefits a student can expect to receive while working with your team as you prepare the job description. FINSSHR will submit the job description on your behalf.
