Most long-term loans may be refinanced through consolidation. Consolidation loans are available through the [Federal Direct Consolidation Loan](http://loanconsolidation.ed.gov/index.html) program. For detailed information about eligibility and application procedures see their [Borrower Services website](https://loanconsolidation.ed.gov/AppEntry/apply-online/appindex.jsp), or contact them by phone at 1-800-557-7392.

There are two ways you may return your signed promissory note for processing: + Send it via US mail in the return envelope provided with your promissory note. + In person at [Schmitz Hall, Rm 129](http://f2.washington.edu/fm/sfs/location-hours) (you may have to wait in line) Your note will usually be processed on the same day it is received and be available for disbursement at that time.

The options available will depend on which type of loan(s) you have. In general, the best thing to do is to contact your lender(s) as soon as possible to ask for advice and assistance. If the University of Washington is your lender, contact a Receivables Advisor in [Student Fiscal Services](http://finance.uw.edu/sfs) at 206-685-9640 or [Email](http://finance.uw.edu/sfs/contact) your question.

It depends on the loan program and the specifics of the repayment program. Since the program guidelines are set by the Department of Education (DOE), visit their [Student Aid Website](http://studentaid.ed.gov/). For specific information, see [Funding Education Beyond High School: The Guide to Federal Student Aid]( http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/publications/student_guide/2009-2010/english/index.htm). Available as a PDF in English and Spanish. In the online version, look for links to: + Borrower Information + Postponing Loan Repayment + Loan Discharge of Cancellation
