What is Love Data Week?
Love Data Week is an international celebration of data held every year during the week of Valentine’s Day. Originally coordinated by Heather Coates, International Love Data Week celebrates all things data and brings people together to share experiences, learn best practices, and have fun. Member institutions of the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) will host events that bring together participants from across our institutions to discuss data-related themes.
Data Viz Championship
Are you a data storyteller eager to showcase your skills to the Husky community? A researcher looking for a new way to communicate your work? The UW Data Visualization Challenge gives Husky students, faculty, and staff a platform to showcase their creative data visualization skills. Use Tableau, Python, R, or whatever tool tells your story best.
Students
Does home court really matter? Do the teams that shoot more threes actually win more? What about the impact of defensive rebounds?
This year’s Data Viz Challenge asks students to analyze data about women’s NCAA basketball and then construct a compelling data visualization.
- Show off your creativity! Analyze the data and share it in a high-impact, easy-to-understand format.
- Take a shot at exploring a new tool! Any tool (or a combination of tools) may be used for your visualization.

Faculty, postdocs, and staff
Faculty, postdocs, and staff, this is your opportunity to share your innovative visualization and research with new audiences. New and creative ways of visualizing data are encouraged. You can submit an existing visualization or design a new one. Examples include:
- An existing visualization that shares public research you are involved in.
- A visualization that highlights information about University of Washington as a whole or about a specific initiative or population.
- Create a visualization using publicly available Big Ten data, such as athletics, enrollment data, and other relevant metrics.

The challenge is part of Love Data Week, an international celebration of data science, management, and sharing. UW is participating alongside the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA), and our winners will advance to represent the UW in the BTAA's broader Data Viz Championship (February 8-12, 2027). All UW community members are invited to apply! Please submit your entries by Wednesday, January 6, 2027.
