Incoming International Wire Fees

When receiving an international wire, please note that the amount may be less than what was requested for. There are various fees charged by banks involved with the international wire transaction. Banks charge other banks what's called a midmarket or interbank rate for trading large amounts of foreign currency. This rate is charged as a markup, which is a percentage of the amount being sent.

The fee is usually charged by the remitting bank on the wire before it is received into UW's bank account. If there is an intermediate bank involved, the intermediate bank may also charge a fee on the proceeds of the funds.

If the wire description displays the following:

PAYMENT DETAILS: FEES: $XX.XX DEDUCTED FROM PAYMENT

This fee is a mutual agreement between the involved banks to split the cost the of the wire transaction. Which means both remitting and receiving banks are charging the proceeds to account for the transaction cost.

Please note, these fees are not refundable.

International Customers

The University of Washington has partnered with Western Union to establish a gateway for our international customers to pay UW with a local EFT payment.  This is a less expensive alternative to an international wire for our customers.  Have the vendor/customer click on the link below and follow the steps to receive local EFT instructions.
