Managing the New Salary Cap Threshold

Greetings Colleagues,

I have received some feedback regarding the April MRAM presentation on the treatment of the DHHS salary cap for upcoming FEC reports for academic year based faculty. As noted, eFECS will be using an average of the salary caps from 2016 ($185,100) and 2017 ($187,000) or $186,050. FECs for faculty whose salary distribution was not changed to accommodate the 2017 salary cap, i.e., continued being charged based on the 2016 salary cap, will require a review to determine if the salary cap cost share needs to be adjusted. Note, this is not an urgent requirement for units that are on the calendar year basis for FEC reporting.

It is critical to recognize that changing the salary distribution to reflect a greater salary charge to existing grants based on the higher 2017 salary cap threshold is the PI’s decision. What is transpiring with eFECS is not a mandate to make salary distribution changes. Charging an existing grant based on the new threshold is optional and should not be done without PI consent and/or simply for the convenience of matching how eFECS is handling the change.

Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at efecs@uw.edu. Please reflect “Salary Cap Cost Sharing” in the subject line.

Thank you,
