Please note that in the interests of fairness and sustainability, the Office of Research has determined that the Visiting International Student Internship & Training (VISIT) program fee waiver will be discontinued as of June 2019. This policy change will be phased in as follows: program fee waiver applications will continue to be accepted until January 1, 2019, and any students who are granted fee waivers must start their internship at the University of Washington no later than June 1, 2019.

The VISIT program itself remains a well-used service and will continue to exist at the University of Washington. In the absence of the fee waiver option, either the student intern or the UW host department will be responsible for timely payment of the one-time VISIT program fee going forward. Departments may find it helpful to know that the VISIT program fee is an allowable expense on most federally-funded grants.

UW departments are strongly encouraged to review and update their own VISIT instructions, reference files, and internal communications to reflect the forthcoming changes to the VISIT fee waiver policy.

About the VISIT program

The Visiting International Student Internship & Training (VISIT) program permits students pursuing degrees at universities outside of the United States to participate in full-time supervised research and work-based learning experiences at the University of Washington for a period of 3 weeks to 12 months. Note: The VISIT program serves a special category of J-1 visa holders. Participants in these programs are student interns, not visiting scholars.
