What is the NIH LRP?

NIH will help repay a portion of early-career researcher's qualifying educational debt in return for engaging in research areas that support the NIH mission. 

Researchers who are or will be conducting at least two years of qualified research funded by a domestic nonprofit organization institution outside NIH, may be eligible for one of the five extramural Loan repayment Programs (LRP) in: Clinical Research, Pediatric Research, Health Disparities Research, Contraception and Infertility Research, or Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds.

Basic LRP Eligibility:

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Doctoral Degree
  • Have student loan debt at least 20% of your annual base salary
  • Research funding from a domestic or nonprofit institution
  • Conducting at least 20 hours a week of research at a Domestic nonprofit institution
