Dear Colleagues,

The Collaborative for Research Education (CORE) has been extremely busy converting our in-person courses to remote learning. We are setting up all courses, if appropriate, through Spring Quarter as Zoom webinars. Because of this change in how we provide learning, we felt it would be a good time to share some Best Practices and Guidance as you are creating your learning plan and preparing to take online coursework.

Planning and Best Practices -- Prior to Your Class

  • Register for your course(s).
  • Be aware that Zoom requires you to download software so please do this well before course starts. It may be helpful to take some of the Zoom training offered by UWIT (though this is not a requirement).
  • Please make sure to download the class documentation before the class begins. The handout links will be sent to you before the beginning of the course in an email generated after you register. Helpful note here:  You can also access class handouts and slides by finding your course in the CORE catalog.
  • Work with your IT department if you have questions – we will not be able to help with technical issues during the course.

Guidance During your CORE Class

  • A few minutes before class start-time, find the Zoom link that was sent to you in the Zoom webinar invitation and click it to join the class.
  • You'll be allowed to enter the class before if starts, but you won't see anything on your monitor until the teacher is starting the class.
  • During the class, your audio and your camera are automatically muted; neither the teacher nor other students can see or hear you. You can view the slides and hear the instructors as they go through the slides, but you cannot see other participants, nor can you ask questions using your mic. Use the “Q&A” at the bottom of your Zoom window to ask questions. We will pause throughout the class to answer questions that have come into the Q&A box.
  • We will be monitoring audio and video throughout the meeting to address issues of quality control. If we are aware of an issue at the meeting source, we will include a note in online chat.
  • We will not be able to accommodate individual attendee technical challenges during the course as you can imagine, but you will be provided an opportunity to provide feedback through our evaluation process.

Preparing for an all-online learning platform has is has been a huge learning curve for CORE and for our instructors. A huge shout out to all our CORE instructors for all their hard work to adapt to remote learning! The CORE team will continue to do what we can to make your learning experience as effective as possible.

Please forward as you feel appropriate. Thank you all for your patience as we move forward!
