TO: UW Academic Departments

From FY 2017 to FY 2021 the program fees for the Visiting International Student Internship & Training (VISIT) and Visiting International Student Engaged in Research (VISER) programs have remained unchanged at $1,250 per intern for VISIT and $1,250 for VISER. The costs associated with these programs have since outpaced our ability to maintain the current price structure. Therefore, the one-time program fees will be increased effective autumn quarter 2021 (September 29, 2021) as follows:

  • $1,500 per intern for VISIT
  • $3,000 per intern for VISER

As per standard protocol, the VISIT program fee will continue to be paid primarily by the intern and the VISER program will continue to be charged to the hosting UW academic department. The program fees will continue to pay for support services provided to students and academic departments.

About the VISIT and VISER programs

The VISIT and VISER programs serve special categories of J-1 visa holders. Participants in these programs are student interns and researchers, not visiting scholars.

The Visiting International Student Internship & Training (VISIT) program permits students pursuing degrees at universities outside of the United States to participate in full-time supervised research and work-based learning experiences at the University of Washington for a period of 3 weeks to 12 months.

The Visiting International Student Engaged in Research (VISER) program permits students pursuing degrees at universities outside the United States to participate in a full-time, supervised research project with a specific educational objective at the University of Washington for a period of 13 to 24 months. VISER students must either be substantially supported by their home government or university (at least 51 percent); or be part of an official exchange agreement between the UW (Office of Global Affairs) and the foreign educational institution.
