What is the NIH Loan Repayment Program?

NIH will help repay student loan debt to encourage outstanding health professionals in the pursuit of research careers in biomedical or biobehavioral research careers. Loan repayment benefits are in addition to the institutional salary received for research. The LRP online application is open this year from September 1 to November 18.

Researchers who are or will be conducting at least two years of qualified research may be eligible for one of six extramural Loan repayment Programs (LRP) in:

  1.  Clinical Research
  2.  Pediatric Research
  3. Health Disparities Research
  4. Contraception and Infertility Research
  5. Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds
  6. Research on Emerging Areas Critical to Human Health (REACH)

Basic LRP Eligibility:

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Doctoral Degree
  • Have student loan debt at least 20% of your annual base salary
  • Research funding from a domestic or nonprofit institution
  • Conducting at least 20 hours a week of research at a Domestic nonprofit institution
