Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to update you on the search for a new Director for the Human Subjects Division.

We are fortunate to have so much expertise in the area of human subjects research administration within the University. As you know, we had several well-qualified individuals apply for the position. Special thanks to those of you who participated in the stakeholder interviews with the candidates. Your input was valuable in making this significant decision.

I am pleased and excited to announce that Jason Malone has accepted the position of HSD Director, effective January 15.

Joining HSD in 2015 as Assistant Director for Regulatory Affairs, Jason has over 20 years of experience in the field -- most of which have been at UW. Jason served as the Clinical Compliance Officer at the Institute for Translational Health Studies for ten years before joining HSD. He originally came to the University from Quorum Review (now Advarra), a for-profit IRB firm, where he gained experience in a variety of operational and management areas including project management, customer relations, and compliance, ultimately holding the title Director of IRB Administration.

Over the next several weeks, Jason will be preparing to assume the HSD Director position when our friend and colleague, Director Karen Moe, retires in mid-January.

We thank Karen for her exceptional contributions and dedication and wish her the very best in retirement.

Please join me in congratulating Jason and, most importantly, supporting him as he takes on the considerable challenges and responsibilities of this critical position. I am confident he will carry forward HSD's mission of protecting participants in research while facilitating the administrative and regulatory processes associated with human subjects research.

And, as always, thank you for all of the important contributions you make to the UW research community!

Joe
